Record #0777: Baby Workout / I'm Going Crazy (Gotta Get You Off My Mind) – JACKIE WILSON

Brunswick 55239 (original, Gloversville pressing) USA, February 1963
Words & Music by:  Side AJackie Wilson, Alonzo Tucker; Side B – Jackie Wilson, Alonzo Tucker
Musicians: Jackie Wilson (vocals), orchestra and chorus conducted by Dick Jacobs.
Recording sessions: Produced by Nat Tarnopol in New York City, NY, in 1962 or early 1963
Highest chart positions:  US #5, US R&B #1, Australia #66

Jackie Wilson was back after few singles in a declining trend. He had six #1 hits in the US R&B, and this was his fifth (the last one was “Higher and Higher” in 1967). Also, this was the highest position he ever got in in the Billboard Hot 100. So, from the American point of view this was his biggest hit whereas from the European viewpoint his biggest hit was “Reet Petite”, the re-issue of which topped the charts in Belgium, Finland, Ireland, Netherlands and UK in 1987.

Side A was included on Wilson’s 1963 album “Baby Workout”, which was the first album he got into the US albums chart, where it peaked at #78.

This stands out as a high-quality record; both sides are very good. Furthermore, both songs are originals, too.

The 1987 re-issue of “Baby Workout” went to #93 in the UK charts.

List price:  Very Good + is $10, Near Mint is $20.
