“Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” was originally recorded by Nina Simone, who had a minor hit with it in 1964 (US #131). The Animals’ cover is the most successful version of the song. Others, who have covered it, include Santa Esmeralda (1977, US #15, US dance #4, UK #41), Elvis Costello (1986, US rock #38, UK #33) and Joe Cocker (1996, UK #53).
