The original “As Tears Go By” was recorded by Marianne Faithfull in 1964
(US #22, Canada #2, UK #9). It was the first song written by Jagger and
Richards, when their manager (Andrew Oldham) forced them to write a song
together. Andrew liked the result, but Mick and Keith thought it was a “terrible
piece of tripe”, hence they gave it away.
In the UK it was released as the flip side of “19th Nervous
Breakdown” (Decca F 12331, UK #2) on 4. February 1966.
“Gotta Get Away” has never been released on a single in the UK.
