Record #0232: Train To Nowhere / Tequila – THE CHAMPS

Challenge 1016 (original) USA, Jan. 15, 1958
Music by:  Side A – Dave Burgess; Side B – Chuck Rio
Musicians: Dave Burgess (guitar), Chuck Rio (sax and piano), Buddy Bruce (guitar), Cliff Hills (bass), Gene Alden (drums)
Recording sessions: Produced by Joe Johnson at Gold Star Studio, Hollywood, CA, Dec. 23, 1957
Highest chart positions:  US #1, US R&B #1, UK #5

Here’s yet another one that became a hit record only after the DJs flipped the record and started playing the B side.

“Tequila” was recorded as filler in three takes at the end of the session and it became the group’s biggest success. Go figure.

The Champs backed Gene Vincent on few sessions he recorded for Challenge in 1966-67. Three singles were released from that material.

List price:  Very Good + is $12.50, Near Mint $25
