Record #0653: Peggy Sue / Everyday – BUDDY HOLLY

Coral 9-61885 (original) USA, 20. Sep. 1957
Words & Music by:  Side A – Jerry Allison, Norman Petty; Side B – Charles Hardin (Holly), Norman Petty
Buddy Holly (guitar and vocals), Jerry Allison (drums on side A, percussion on side B), Joe B. Mauldin (upright bass), Vi Ann Petty (celesta on side B)
Recording sessions: Produced by Norman Petty at Norman Petty Studios, Clovis, NM, Side A on 29. June and 1. July 1957; Side B on 29. May 1957
Highest chart positions:  US #3, US R&B #3, UK #6, Canada #4

“Peggy Sue” was Peggy Sue Gerron, the girlfriend and future wife of drummer Jerry Allison.

Side A sounds like it has two guitars. Niki Sullivan could be the other guitarist.

The group playing on this record is the Crickets, but due to some contractual issues with record labels (Brunswick, Coral and Decca), Buddy Holly has been credited as the artist.

Having the celesta solo in “Everyday” is not the greatest idea in the history of rock’n’roll. Maybe someone could remove it with AI and overdub it with Buddy Holly style guitar solo. 😊

List price:  Very Good+ is $30, Near Mint is $60
