Buddy Holly
had already recorded the title song for Decca (at Bradley’s Barn in July 1956),
but he wanted to have another go at it. However, his contract with them
prevented him from re-recording his Decca material for five years. The
workaround was to release this single under the name of the Crickets.
Though he
was credited for it, Norman Petty didn’t actually contribute to writing “That’ll
Be the Day”.
The song
got its name from John Wayne’s catchphrase in the film “the Searchers”.
