Record #0654: That’ll Be the Day / I’m Looking For Someone To Love – BUDDY HOLLY AND THE CRICKETS

Coral 65618 (original, not 1st release) USA, 8. Dec. 1969
Words & Music by:  Side A – Jerry Allison, Buddy Holly, Norman Petty; Side B – Holly, Petty
Musicians:
Buddy Holly (lead guitar and vocals), Jerry Allison (drums), Larry Welborn (upright bass), Niki Sullivan (b-vocals), Ramona Tollett (b-vocals), Gary Tollett (b-vocals)
Recording sessions: Produced by Norman Petty at Norman Petty Studios, Clovis, NM, Feb.24-25, 1957
Highest chart positions:  Unknown for this release

The first release of this was under Brunswick label in 1957 and I’ve already posted that record here.

Coral had released Holly’s final US charting single “Love Is Strange” / “You’re the One” (US #105) earlier in 1969. Maybe they tried to ride on with that success by releasing his first hit single again.

Though he was credited for it, Norman Petty didn’t contribute to writing “That’ll Be the Day”. Holly and Allison wrote it before they were in business with Petty.

The song got its name from John Wayne’s catchphrase in the film “the Searchers”.

List price:  Not listed in the Goldmine Catalog. Promotional copies of this go for $30 in eBay.
